Minka - Japanese Farmhouse |
 |
 |
|
| The following pictures,
taken in 1993, show the building of a traditional Japanese farmhouse
(minka) in the countryside of Japan. Wood from two
previously standing farmhouses, both over 150 years old, were
utilized for the beams and posts of the structure. Since the
old farmhouses had lighter thatched roofs, extra support beams
were necessary to hold a new roof made of ceramic tile. The
beams and posts are held together without nails, using the ancient
method of wood stakes and interlinking cuts. The process from
laying the foundation to completion of the minka spanned
a total of 6 months. |
